As we go through life, we experience moments of joy and happiness, while also enduring difficult times. As time passes, we look back on all these experiences and reflect on who we are in the present. The days we have lived sometimes become warm memories that give us the strength to move forward, embedding themselves as precious moments in our lives.
During my difficult childhood, I had dear friends who provided me with comfort. The tiny clothes I wore as a newborn were repurposed into cherished stuffed dolls, which soothed my wounds and warmly embraced my young heart. These treasured memories took deep root within me, and over time, they became fundamental elements of my artistic practice.
My work is the embodiment of these cherished moments, layered one by one, filled with pure love and memories. The warmth and affection found in my recollections are reflected in glass or transformed into playful scenes of teddy bears bouncing on rubber balls.
These warm memories continue to fuel my life, allowing me to live in the present with radiant dreams and love. They form the foundation of my work, continuously expanding into new narratives within my creations.

All opinions that I allegedly paint dreams come from journalists. In my life, maybe I've tried to paint one dream, a fragment of a dream in my early youth. But I never use dreams. Maybe I said on occasion that all I have in common with the surrealists is this oneiric method of creativity. I never wonder why I am painting a bird sitting on someone's shoulder, it can happen spontaneously, just like in a dream. My creation is easy going. If it fits, just leave it there. It doesn't mean anything.

HUMANS EXPERIENCE A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS THROUGHOUT LIFE. IN THE EBB AND FLOW OF JOY AND SORROW, LONELINESS AND WARMTH, WE SOMETIMES FIND SMALL, PERSONAL SOURCES OF COMFORT. THESE MOMENTS OF SOLACE OFTEN LINGER IN OUR CHILDHOOD MEMORIES, AND REAPPEAR UNEXPECTEDLY, BRINGING A QUIET SMILE TO OUR FACES.
DURING MY OWN CHILDHOOD, WHICH WAS FAR FROM AFFLUENT, I FOUND COMFORT IN HUMBLE OBJECTS—WELL-WORN BABY CLOTHES TURNED INTO TEDDY BEARS, OR SIMPLE RUBBER BOUNCY BALLS. IN TIMES WHEN I HAD TO HOLD BACK EMOTIONS I COULDN’T EXPRESS, THESE ITEMS BECAME SILENT COMPANIONS, QUIETLY PROTECTING ME WITHIN MY OWN LITTLE WORLD.
THE "BALLOON BEAR" FEATURED IN THIS SERIES IS A FORM BORN FROM THE LINGERING WARMTH AND CLARITY OF THOSE PAST EMOTIONS. THE BALLOON HELD IN THE BEAR'S HAND REPRESENTS THE SMALL HOPES CLUTCHED BY A CHILD’S HEART, AND CARRIES AN IMAGE OF INNOCENCE DRIFTING LIKE AIR—LIGHT AND UNTETHERED.
THE BEAR TIGHTLY GRIPPING THE BALLOON IS A SYMBOL OF RELEASING INNER HEAVINESS, A MEMORY THAT, WHILE IT MAY APPEAR ENCLOSED WITHIN GLASS, GENTLY GLOWS FROM WITHIN.
TO SOME, THIS BEAR MAY RESEMBLE A TOY FROM A DISTANT CHILDHOOD; TO OTHERS, IT MAY BE A FRAGMENT OF LONG-FORGOTTEN FEELINGS.
THOUGH ROOTED IN CHILDHOOD MEMORIES, THIS WORK IS CREATED WITH THE HOPE THAT IT MAY RESONATE WITH ANYONE LIVING THROUGH THE PRESENT. I WISH FOR THESE SMALL AND TENDER PIECES OF EMOTION TO FIND NEW LIFE WITHIN THE TRANSPARENT GLASS, CONTINUING TO OFFER STRENGTH TO CARRY ON.

[아트코리아방송 = 박시유 기자] 김선우 작가의 첫 개인전이 2023년 1월 2일부터 31일까지 유갤러리에서 진행된다. 작가의 첫 개인전인 만큼 지금까지 작업한 작품의 시리즈를 모두 볼 수 있으며 작가로 들어선 첫 계기를 만들어준 작품도 감상할 수 있다. 이번 전시엔 김선우의 유리 공예품 12여 점이 전시될 예정이다.
